NDI Marks 10 Years of Support for Young Political Party Leaders Across Latin America

Fifteen years ago, when Latin American political parties were facing a crisis of confidence, NDI and the then Ministry of the Presidency of Chile brought together senior political party leaders from 14 countries to consider how to boost popular support for party reform. 

They focused on generating new leadership and ideas for political parties, more leadership opportunities for women and young people, internal party democratization, and establishing links among political movements and parties in the hemisphere so they could share ideas.

The result of their efforts was the Political Leadership Program, launched by NDI in 1999 to help emerging political leaders strengthen their management and organizational skills to promote political party renewal.

NDI Deplores Expulsion of International Election Observers from Moldova

NDI deplored the actions by Moldovan authorities that led to the cancellation by the European Network of Election Monitoring Organizations (ENEMO) of a mission to observe the July 29 parliamentary elections.  ENEMO, a partner organization of NDI, called off its mission following a string of unwarranted arrests of ENEMO leaders and continued harassment of its observers.

In-Country Perspectives

Thousands of wind-up and solar-powered blue radios distributed by NDI in Sudan are bringing a dialogue about national issues to isolated communities.  A recently-completed NDI program has put more than 265,000 radios into the hands of Sudanese citizens since the end of 2007. Michael Rifer, who works in Sudan for NDI, describes the radios’ impact in one community.
